There is no legislative requirement for refresher training for any units of competency from National Training Packages. It is however, suggested that refresher training be conducted every 3 years.  This refresher training is at the discretion of the employer.


This unit of competence will be assessed. The assessment will be based on the principles of CBT (competency-based training). A successful outcome for this certificate will be determined by a range of different methods including written submission of work, observation of simulated and practical activities, structured questioning or discussions.

Course participants will learn about applicable legislation and company confined space procedures, definitions and types of confined spaces.  Participants will learn about hazard identification and risk management procedures, hazardous atmospheres including, gas monitoring techniques isolation, purging, ventilation, permits and authority.

Have a satisfactory understanding of the roles and responsibilities of teams including, standby rescue equipment and procedures.   Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment:

  • There are currently no prerequisites however, it is advisable that course participants have at least a basic level of literacy, numeracy and communication skills as well as a reasonable level of fitness and a desire to work outdoors.


  • The course is appropriate for those working in or wishing to work in confined spaces (enclosed or partially enclosed) for the purpose of carrying out work or inspections and also is appropriate for those performing sentry or stand by person roles, at worksites within civil construction; coal mining; drilling; extractive industries; metalliferous mining and general construction.
